College of Business Internships
Student Information and Guidelines

An internship can be one of the most important things you do while in school. Internships provide you with real-world experience and skills that will enhance your degree. Companies are looking for experience in addition to a college degree, and an internship is an excellent way to ensure you have that. In addition, many companies offer full-time positions to their interns before making them available to the general public.

What is an internship?

  • A one-semester, non-credit bearing learning experience that allows you to work for a company off campus and gain skills and experience related to your degree.
  • An opportunity to implement long-term career and educational goals in a practical and professional learning environment.

Why do an internship?

  • Internships allow students to apply knowledge gained in the classroom to real-world experience. This can serve as a valuable learning tool, as well as a welcome addition to a resume.
  • Involvement in internships allow students to develop contacts within chosen industries, and to gain first hand research among specific companies.
  • An internship is an excellent way to establish a relationship with a company of interest in order to demonstrate skills and work ethic. This will make a student the prime candidate for a future full-time opportunity.

Internship Guidelines and Etiquette
  • Once you have accepted an internship, inform all other companies till considering you for an internship. Stop all additional internship search activities for that particular time period.
  • Complete a minimum of 10 hours per week, 100 hours total per semester, of work.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor throughout the internship, both in dealing with internal
co-workers, as well as external customers. Represent both the USF College of Business and the employer in a professional manner at all times.
  • Respond to all employer correspondence within 24 hours.
  • Comply with all rules and regulations as set forth by the employer, including work hours and dress code.
  • Perform the duties of the internship to the best of your ability, utilizing the experience as a hands-on learning opportunity. Make tangible contributions to the company using classroom knowledge and past experience.
  • Remain consistent and punctual in the submission of all work assignments to the supervisor.
  • If an issue arises with an internship, bring it to the employer's attention and attempt to reconcil it immediately. Contact your internship supervisor, as well as the College of Business Office of Employer Relations, if any problems arise that will not allow you to continue the internship.
  • If you choose to resign from an internship, you must give the employer a minimum of 1 week prior notice (preferably 2 weeks).
