Teaching PhilosophyIt is my belief that effective teaching often means breaking down traditional teacher-student barriers and assuming the role of a full partner in adult students’ learning. In this I believe that my role is not only to "teach" at times, but also to encourage and motivate students to willingly sieze responsibility for their own learning. I thus see my job as an educator, within the context of appropriate course materials, as necessitating the creation of conditions and systems that give each student reasons to actively participate, and to exert their best efforts, in class. In general, I also believe that students (particularly students of strategic planning) need to develop a broad and deep perspective on issues. In my mind, an effective strategic planner is an integrator; that is, a decision maker more likely to focus on the big picture, blending business realities with a recognition and consideration of the values and assumptions (ethical and other) underlying possible courses of action, as well as the assessments, opinions and judgments of others. Such an integrator would also be more likely to lead and/or engage the genuine dialog needed for making decisions that can hold up to the often intense scrutiny of other interest groups, and also, perhaps, be more likely to cultivate desired results for the enterprise.
