Michael Bowen
Instructor

Professor Michael (Mike) Bowen earned an A.B. in Economics from the University of Michigan in 1971.  After several years of work, and eventual self-employment as a manufacturers’ agent (new product marketing), he returned to school for an MBA at the University of Detroit) in 1981.  His coursework there led him to pursue a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior (Minor Area: Strategic Management) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Upon graduation from Illinois, he joined the faculty of the Management Department at the University of Notre Dame (1985-1994).

Since moving to Florida in the Summer of 1994, Professor Bowen has been involved in several entrepreneurial enterprises, has consulted with several large and small organizations (public and private sectors), co-taught on-line courses for the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and taught at USF as a visiting professor, an adjunct, and as a volunteer in the undergraduate, MBA and Executive MBA programs. He has also helped develop a three-course leadership sequence in the MBA program; taught Strategic Management, Marketing Management, and Systems Thinking; and has co-founded the Leadership Development Center, and the Leadership House (residence hall) on campus.  He became a full-time member of the Management Department in the Fall of 2003, and was voted an Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher of the Year, 2003-2004, in the College of Business and the University.

Professor Bowen has published scholarly articles, chapters, reviews, and cases in the management, small business/entrepreneurship, and business ethics, literatures.  His main research interest lies in “escalating commitment” (the tendencies for people to, perhaps, throw “good money after bad”).  Other research areas are leadership and organizational development; organizational culture change; business ethics, accountability, spirituality and managing; and systems thinking, strategy, and managing.   He has also served as Book Review Editor for the journal Organizational Analysis.
