The Management Information Systems (MIS) major is designed to develop
the skills and knowledge necessary for information systems development
and support positions in business and other organizations. A BA/BS in
MIS is granted through the College of Business and therefore shares a
foundation set of business courses with other majors in the college.
These courses require a minimum grade of C- along with maintaining an
overall GPA of 2.0. The MIS curriculum includes 6 required courses and 2
approved electives.
The program requires 120 hours of coursework. Included are a minimum
of 54 hours of non-business courses, a minimum of 60 hours of business
courses and additional electives as needed to meet the 120 hour
requirement. Required courses in non-business include General Education
Requirements, Liberal Arts Exit Requirements, Speech/ Writing
Requirements for Business Majors and electives. The required courses in
business include Foundation Courses in Business, Major Requirements and
Approved Electives.
The undergraduate curriculum that leads to a Bachelor of Arts or
Bachelor of Science degree is composed of several segments: (1) broad
general education in the arts, humanities and sciences; (2) the common
body of knowledge for management responsibilities; and (3) specialized
areas of concentration in Accounting, Economics, Finance, General
Business, International Business, Management, Marketing, and Management
Information Systems. Through flexibility in its requirements, the
College is able to satisfy the different interests and career objectives
of students with diverse backgrounds.
The role of electives in the MIS student's curriculum is extremely
important as electives are used to both round out the student's
experience and exposure as well as to complete the required number of
course hours for business requirements, non-business requirements and
university graduate requirements. Students can satisfy the elective
requirements with any combination of MIS courses, but are encouraged to
choose electives that will support an interest in a particular area of
MIS. Numerous courses, both inside and outside the College of Business,
can be taken to strengthen your career preparation. For a more detailed
explanation of specific courses you should seek assistance from your
adviser or an Information Systems faculty member.
Courses may be taken as either a full-time or part-time student. As
many courses within the program can have prerequisites or corequisites,
or are offered at only certain times of the year, outlining a Program of
Study customized to your individual goals is strongly recommended.
Students should endeavor to establish a formal Program of Study with the
aid of an advisor or Information Systems faculty member that will define
a coherent sequence of courses to satisfy the student's objectives in
the program. Remember that you are ultimately responsible for designing
an academic program that will suit your individual needs.
