Teaching Philosophy

Most things in life can be understood at different levels of abstraction or detail. I hope to help students identify the level of abstraction that they currently are at, think about how much deeper they need to go and then get there.

Information is not very useful unless it can be retrieved. Effective information retrieval requires good indexing. To this end, I encourage students to relate concepts they are learning with any issues that appeal to them and to other concepts in their academic program. This, I believe, helps provide a useful perspective as well as makes it more likely that concepts will be recalled at appropriate times in their lives.
