Pearls of Wisdom:
There is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, more dangerous to manage than the creation of a new order of things (Niccolo Machiavelli 1781).

The significant problems we face in life cannot be solved at the level of thinking at which we created them (Albert Einstein).

An approximate answer to the right question is worth a good deal more than an exact answer to an approximate question (J. W. Tukey).

Theory without practice is sterile; practice without theory is blind (Kurt Lewin 1946).

He who loves practice without theory is like the sailor who boards ship without a rudder and compass and never knows where he may cast (Leonardo da Vinci).

What ain't worth studying ain't worth studying well (Anonymous).

Researchers use statistics as a drunken man uses lamp-posts - for support rather than for illumination (Carver 1978).

Doubt is not a pleasant state, but certainty is a ridicolous one (Voltaire).

Research Interests:
  1. I'm most recognized for my research on the adoption and diffusion of technological innovations. More specifically, my research focuses on the post-adoptive human processes such as user continuance, assimilation, and resistance. Why do I study this area? Because technically sophisticated systems, such as ERP and e-procurement systems, are useless if they are not used adequately and appropriately by the very users who are expected to benefit from their use. It is sad that after forty years of system development and the design of numerous systems development tools and methodologies, IT systems in organizations still fail because of inattention to people-related issues such as user resistance, lack of user assimilation, and so forth. Because systems are designed by people and for people, and because systems embed human expectations, norms, and agendas, they cannot be isolated from their human dimension. My 2001 MIS Quarterly paper on IT continuance is widely viewed as one of the seminal contributions to research in this area.

  2. As a researcher for USF's Center for Research on Healthcare Systems and Policies (CRHSP), I have also been involved in healthcare informatics research, working with state and county governments, regional hospitals, and community-based organizations to study a wide-range of healthcare IT projects, such as the business value of healthcare IT investments, physician resistance toward new IT, and a healthcare information exchange as a collaborative tool to support the medical needs of Florida's special needs populations during emergencies such as hurricane evacuations.

  3. Recently, I started exploring online social networks and inter-firm virtual relationships as a way of building learning, social support, and other social outcomes. I expect this research to eventually extend to new forms of online media, such as MySpace, YouTube, and Second Life, but I haven't yet published anything in this area yet.
